IE stands for Inspection Eye, also called a rodding eye. Pipe layers build IE’s into sewer lines as part of the pipework for maintenance purposes. Not only can a maintenance person remove the IE to look inside, he can also insert his cleaning rods through it.
The purpose of an Inspection Eye Cover is to protect and mark the position of the IE.
